Principle 7

Politics

The Politics principle examines the purpose, power, and structure of the political system on a national, state and local level. Youth are enlightened to the importance of being politically astute and active within their communities. They are challenged to know who are and what is the role of their elected officials, how are laws made, and how to organize for change in their communities. Participants debate the positive and negative role of the mass media and how communities of color are represented through these sources. Youth are also challenged to exercise their right to vote and how this single act is a powerful tool in making our voices heard. The Politics principle culminates with “Adam Clayton Powell, Jr. Appreciation Day” as we celebrate and honor this political giant and other notable politicians of color.
